4 A DIALOGUE ON THE HUMAN PROSPECT
There is an apt example to quote. Poems like Syamaladandakam
and Soundaryalahari are attributed to Sri Sankara. On close
examination we would start wondering if he had to author a work
like Soundaryalahari. We would be urged to conclude that he could
not have done it. We cannot say that it was composed for the sake
of common devotees either.
When we consider all this, we would realize that we have come
so far accepting all the fallacies arising from ordinary reasoning and
intellection in the various religious or prophetic traditions. And it
is certain therefore that we cannot make a full assessment of the
situation. Again if there is any great soul who has led a flawless
life, the contemporaries do not comprehend or recognize or follow
him, missing the intent of his mission totally. This is an unfortunate
hurdle. All of us know this from experience. I have recognized this
as a fact through experience.
I have countless experiences of persecution from co-travelers,
colleagues, from authorities, institutions and from a whole lot of
believers, those simpletons without any power of discrimination. It
has been so from the beginning of my spiritual life and through all
the occasions I had worked for it wholeheartedly in surrender. It
must have been so with those who have gone before me and their
accounts give us that history. It is evident in the lives of great souls
of recent times. Jesus and Moses have shown us the greatness
of love. Prophet Muhammad was full of compassion. How did
the contemporary society treat them? We have the examples of
the Buddha, Sankaracharya, Padmapadar, Dayananda Saraswati,
Ramatirthar, Sri Ramakrishna, Vivekananda, Chattampi Swamikal
who was dear to Kerala and Sri Narayana Guru. How much they
have gone through! If we train ourselves to look at the trials and
tribulations they went through, we can make out for whose sake
